The PS5 Pro, at $900, is a different conversation altogether. It packs a significantly more powerful GPU and proprietary image reconstruction — PSSR — that tangibly improves visual quality on patched games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or Gran Turismo 7. But GTA 6 at launch doesn't guarantee a day-one Pro patch. Paying $900 to play GTA 6 under identical conditions to a $450 Slim is a risky bet.

GTA 6 as a Litmus Test for Each Model's Limits

Rockstar Games has shared no information about a specific PS5 Pro mode for GTA 6 at launch. The base experience on PS5 Slim or Fat should therefore be identical to the Pro initially — pending a later patch. This detail changes everything for anyone considering spending $900 primarily for this title.

What GTA 6 really demands is storage. The game should weigh between 100 and 150 GB based on current estimates, meaning the 825 GB internal SSD in Slim models will be occupied 15 to 18 percent by this single title. An external USB SSD remains the simplest solution for players with substantial libraries — and that applies to all models.

Tight stock is a signal, not an emergency. Some configurations are occasionally scarce, notably the digital Slim in bundles. But calling it a widespread shortage would be overselling it: the PS5 is available everywhere across France in big-box retail and e-commerce, without unusual delays as of September 15, 2026. The tension on a few specific SKUs looks more like a GTA effect than a structural breakdown.

Buying in a rush because stock seems to be shrinking is exactly the behavior third-party resellers hope to trigger. Prices above the official MSRP on secondary marketplaces are indicators of speculation, not genuine scarcity.

The Real Trade-off: What You Lose With Each Model

• PS5 Slim digital: low entry price, but zero access to the physical market. Viable if you buy few games and stick with the PlayStation Store.
• PS5 Slim with disc drive: the best flexibility-to-price ratio. Recommended for most buyers.
• PS5 Pro: justified only if you play on a large 4K screen and chase patched games long-term. Not the right console for GTA 6 alone.

The original PS5 Fat, if you still find one new, has no technical advantage over the Slim — it's bulkier and thermally less efficient. Its only appeal is an occasionally negotiated clearance price.
